PETE HUTTLINGER INTERVIEW #1
(Originally aired on April 30, 2009)
In addition to being an ace Nashville session player, the late Pete Huttlinger was one of the most musical and technically advanced fingerstyle guitarists of our time. In his hands, a flattop became a mini-orchestra as he juggled a tune’s melody, harmony, bass lines and even percussion. Since winning the 2000 National Fingerpick Guitar Championship, Huttlinger has been featured in Guitar Player, Acoustic Guitar, Vintage Guitar, Guitar World Acoustic, Premier Guitar and Fingerstyle Guitar magazines.
Huttlinger's 2009 album, Finger Picking Wonder, pays tribute to the great Stevie Wonder with ten of Wonder's songs arranged as acoustic guitar instrumentals. The album raises the bar for fingerstyle steel-string and allows us to hear Wonder's compositions in a fresh, spellbinding context. In our exclusive interview, Huttlinger describes arranging and recording Finger Picking Wonder.
