OZ NOY INTERVIEW
(Originally aired on May 7, 2009)
Noy was born in Israel, where he began playing guitar professionally as a teenager. His love of rock and jazz brought him to New York in the late '90s, where he established himself as a top player in the city's ultra-competitive guitar scene. Noy is noted for his strong grooves, improvisational fire and daring use of effects. Mixing angular bebop with bold electronic colors, Noy simultaneously channels Jimi Hendrix, Sly Stone and Thelonious Monk.
In our exclusive interview, Noy explains the role sonic textures play in his composing and how it's essential to study the masters before attempting to break new ground in jazz guitar. We'll also hear tracks from three of Noy's albums: Fuzzy, Ha! and Oz Live.
