CAROLYN WONDERLAND INTERVIEW
(Originally aired on December 1, 2011)
Fans of rootsy guitar and rockin' vocals in Austin, Texas, need no introduction to Carolyn Wonderland, as she is a regional favorite. But the rest of the world needs to know about Austin's best-kept secret, and with Peace Meal — Wonderland's 2011 album — now we all have an opportunity to hear her burn. Andy first saw Wonderland on Austin City Limits and was floored by her feral guitar playing and incredible voice. With Peace Meal, Wonderland gets to stretch out with her longtime band and showcase her writing, singing and playing in a range of styles and moods. Peace Meal is produced by Ray Benson (Asleep at the Wheel) and Larry Campbell (Bob Dylan, Levon Helm) — two splendid guitarists who know the real deal when they hear it.
In our exclusive interview, Wonderland describes recording Peace Meal, and tells us what it was like to work with Benson and Campbell. She also reveals her early influences and explains how she wound up throwing away her flatpick and embracing a fingerstyle technique. We'll hear selections from Peace Meal throughout the feature.
